The Olympics started in ancient Greece as a sports event celebrating male Gods. We know this because the artwork from that time features male athletes as Gods.
Today, woman athletes remain far below 50/50 representation in part because there aren’t as many categories for them as there are for men. They are also not seen as much since sponsors and streaming sites favor male athletes over women.
During the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games, we will cement female figures in sports as Greek statues because women need to be seen, remembered, and celebrated.
